Tuire Kayapó

‘Tuire Kayapó’ (First Contact) is a moving portrait of the most important female chief of the Kayapó people, known for her environmental activism in the Brazilian Amazon since the late 1980s. In her first interview ever, which took place on January 13th, 2017 in her village in Kaprankrere, Tuire speaks about the issues of the Kayapó people such as deforestation, expansion of the cities towards the Indigenous territories, demarcation, discrimination, national agricultural policies, public administration, corruption and infectious diseases as a result of all this.

Now, three decades later, with the advances of audio/visual technology, we go back to the Snowy Peaks of Sierra Nevada de Santa Maria to illuminate their ethos against the backdrop of an increasingly fragile world.

Yesterdays

Yesterdays was co-produced by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) in 1982, by Jerry Baumgarner (MCSO) and Michelle Kribs (OHS). It is a little over 25 minutes long and is in both color and in black and white. It presents information from the 1930’s through the 1980’s about the history of some parts of MCSO operations. Segments include Poor Farm operations, the construction of Rocky Butte Jail in 1939-1944, Larch Mountain Road construction, the creation of the anti-protest Emergency Squad in 1963, the River Patrol, a 1966 plane crash search and rescue, and the motorcycle division and trick team.

Don Emilio and His Little Doctors

Don Emilio is a humble, 63-year-old man who lives in the Amazon rainforest, seven miles from the city of Iquitos, Peru. For all of his adult life he has worked as a curandero and vegetalista, a traditional healer. He estimates that in his career he has treated more than 2,500 clients. Through the camera lens of anthropologist Luis Eduardo Luna, Don Emilio tells us about his practice, his beliefs, his community, and his life. He shows us how he prepares ayahuasca and other herbal medicines. Finally, we see Don Emilio treat a man who has come to him for help, and hear from a poor woman who has brought her infant son for medical care.

Yet, as they collectively mourn, they discover solace in their shared memories of Kcey's radiant spirit.

Iwianch, the Devil Deer

An enigmatic presence haunts the depths of the Amazon rainforest, where an indigenous Achuar teenager has disappeared. During the search for the young man, his family decides to consult with a Shaman, who, immersed in trance, reveals that the young man was taken by the devil, but that he has intervened by showing him the way back to his home. While waiting for his return, secrets of the rainforest and Amazonian visions of life after death are touched, vanishing the documentary filmmaker’s concepts of reality.

Falsos Positivos

The "Falsos Positivos" scandal that exploded on October 2008 revealed how and why ranks of the Colombian Army started to kill innocent people. Lured by money prizes given by the President Uribe's policy called "Seguridad Democratica", the Colombian Army dressed the bodies in military fatigues to claim the rewards for the fight against the FARC guerrilla. "Falsos Positivos" follows the trip of two families to retrieve the rests of their beloved, along with shocking interviews to activists, a former General, political analysts and witnesses of this huge scandal.

Across the Amazon, Indigenous guards are unarmed patrols that peacefully defend ancestral territories against threats like oil, mining and poaching. They use diverse technologies to monitor their lands, and when necessary, force out illegal operations and actors. Most of this daily work, which involves lengthy hikes and patient observation, goes unseen. This film depicts the process of the Indigenous Guard: its patrols, its watchful vigilance over the landscape, and its support of the community. Their work as guards helps ensure that destruction in the Amazon doesn’t advance, and that their community has the vital space it needs to live life on their own terms.

Until now, they have stood on the sidelines. They have not appeared before the cameras. They have not taken part in public discussion. It is mainly to them that the documentary film by the well-known journalist Ewa Ewart was devoted. It shows the face of the Smolensk catastrophe through the eyes of the victims' families. April 10, 2010 went down in the memory of Poles as a day of national drama. But for the characters in the film, it was the day of their greatest personal drama. Along with the presidential couple, their loved ones passed away in shocking circumstances. For most, the time passing since the Smolensk catastrophe does not bring relief. Ewa Ewart and her film crew accompany the families at various stages of their struggle with difficult emotions. The film is in the process of being made and will include sequences and stills that have not been used anywhere before.

The anecdotes lived with Pimpi conclude in a tragic experience for his family. The story takes place in a small town in the middle of the Colombian Pacific jungle. Past and present mix to form a story where the town and its inhabitants are witnesses of the struggle of black people.
