Barren sands and endless gales proved too much for human settlement on this island off the coast of Nova Scotia. Only a small group of researchers and maintenance people occupy the island; horses run wild, seals and birds multiply profusely, and the Ipswich sparrow has found a fruitful breeding ground for itself. Sable Island provides a perfect opportunity to observe nature in an untouched, organic laboratory.

A motorboat enters the picture from the right, obeying the directions sent by radio and forming a spiral in the water's surface. The boat then turns to the left and leaves the scene; solely its wake is visible for a time.

The 6 minute short film SLEDGE (1962) was filmed and directed by then 27 years old Kotse Mitrev in Stip, Republic of Macedonia. The lead role is played by London-based producer-director George Stankoski, then 4 years old and son of Macedonian actor Panko Stankoski. SLEDGE won first prizes in the Sarajevo Festival Children's Film Category in 1962, and the Belgrade Republic Festival Shorts Category in 1964. SLEDGE was recently recovered by Stip-based historian and film archivist Alexander Donski, and efforts are now being made to restore and re-scan this working copy for high quality viewing.

Justine observes the rhythms of her day, giving a unique portrait of the experience of a vivacious young woman living with severe neurological disorders. Justine survived a harrowing breakdown as a child but her medical condition is not the subject of this film, which instead gives a sense of her extraordinary life and experience in the rhythms of an ordinary day as she turns 18. Justine's parents tenderly build close family bonds to sustain their youngest daughter. They speak perceptively and movingly about their daughter and sister. Meanwhile, cuts to the UK welfare system endanger the family's hard won achievements, and raise questions and fears for her future.

L'île de Pâques

The first Easter Island documentary, filmed in 1935 when the Belgian naval ship Mercator came to collect Drs. Henri Lavacherry and Alfred Métraux, who had arrived six months before to carry out archaeological and ethnological work. The film, directed with melodramatic gusto and featuring a full orchestral score by Maurice Jaubert (who also did the narration), shows islanders, the monuments, and a public dance. A theme of decay and decadence characterizes the film, the motif portrayed gruesomely by extensive close-ups of the inhabitants of the leper colony there at the time. The film suited a romantic image of a mysterious lost civilization, the survivors eking out a pitiful existence on a barren rock. (Grant McCall)
