Freedom and Unfreedom

Freedom and Unfreedom unfolds in a single two-and-a-half-minute take. In a moody, dialogue-free piece, a single African-American figure appears in an abstract landscape, dancing among multicolored energy fields. The limbless, spiritless figure dances back and forth, only to be joined by another. Suddenly, dissonant phrases emerge as a hard gray boundary descends between them, and soon more and more walls begin to collapse around the figure until it is completely trapped in a small box, roughly the size and level of the compartments in which slaves were transported from Africa to America. A film miniature set to classical music, inspired by Georges Bizet's "Carmen" suite, orchestrated by Rodion Shchedrin, animated in loose matter (colored salt) directly under the camera by Aleksandra Korejwo. The music is fully synchronized with the image. The sounds of the music awaken Carmen from her sleep. Her silhouette is illuminated by a nearby bonfire. In this expressive dance, elements of Andalusian gypsy folklore (flamenco) choreographically intertwine with the passionate symbolism of Carmen's gestures. It's the second film in a trilogy.

Strange Birds

The allegorical story of two humanized birds - father and son, who usually walk the earth and fly only in case of danger. The two birds are out for a leisurely stroll, playing music together and taking selfies until a hungry cat attempts to spoil their fun. After several unique and imaginative evasive maneuvers, the birds pelt the cat with apple bombs. The film is one of the jewels of the cartoon: the Czech tradition, Disney anthropomorphism and innovative pre-electronic music score.
