Re-enactment

For this work Alÿs purchased a gun in Mexico City then walked through the city streets with the weapon in his hand. After eleven minutes he was arrested by the police. The following day he repeated the action, this time in cooperation with the police. By presenting a record of this dramatic action alongside footage of its reenactment, Alÿs blurs the boundaries between documentation and fiction. Questioning the concept of authenticity, this work demonstrates “how media can distort and dramatize the immediate reality of a moment,” the artist has said. Vera

Vera is an experimental film that combines drawn-on-film and digital animation. The images unfold to the rhythm of music played by Vera Guilaroff, a pianist from Quebec that has now been forgotten by history. Guilaroff accompanied numerous silent films in Montreal movie theaters during the 1910s and 1920s. To our knowledge, this is the first time in nearly 100 years that her music has been used again in a film.

Set in an oneiric, liminal space, this experimental short dissects the most banal of routines—eliminate, change, wash—and refracts them through the prism of identity. What do we flush away, what do we conceal with powder and polish, what residue do we scrub from the self? The film doesn't offer answers. It exists in the space between viewer and image, where meaning is slippery and selfhood runs down the drain.

Joe Lombardi -- a twenty-something man-child -- wants nothing more than to break away from his mundane suburban life and job at a local New Jersey newspaper. His editor, Mr. Simon, promises Joe a promotion to a big-time New York City paper if he writes one last, home-run article -- on the Jersey Shore dating scene. But Joe hasn't been down there since he was a kid, with his now-estranged mother; and he has a general disdain for the Jersey Shore culture. He reluctantly takes on the story and is writing about Danny, his best friend who believes that he can meet a wife in the clubs; Marc, a nerdy guy from high school who has now transformed himself into a club going, drug using, fornicator and Ashley, his boss's wild niece, who secretly aspires to a life as a fashion designer. Eventually, writing about these quirky characters opens Joe's eyes, forcing him to truly understand all that the area has to offer and making him re-evaluate his own life... and grow up.
