An ordinary man wakes up in a world upside down! Illegible newspaper, people backing up, cars backing up: nothing is the same anymore, but everything seems to be going well.
A housewife tires of her husband's annoying behavior and returns to her mother. At first, the husband is quite pleased to have the house all to himself. But he quickly discovers that even the most basic domestic chores can be fraught with difficulty.
The movie takes place in one of the Russian provincial cities during the Civil War. The film consists of a series of tightly interlinked vignettes, the most sustained of which details the story of a man and a woman who are passionately in love. Their attempts to consummate their passion are constantly thwarted, by their families, by the Church and bourgeois society in general.
