Rofles or graffiti: the non-violent fight of the Sahrawi people

Many Saharawis are claiming to return to war in order to break the impasse of wainting during 40 years. However, the Sahrawi nonviolent activists argue that they are pushing Morocco to an untenable position. For them, the nonviolent action and the respect of human rights make Sahrawis part of the new world that is coming and also they are building a sane society. The documentary explores this debate with activists of the refugee camps and of the occupied territories.

Tell them I exist

Tell them I exist paints the portraits of Naâma Asfari, a Sahrawi jurist and pro-independence activist sentenced to 30 years detention in Morocco; and of his wife, Claude Mangin, who from prison visits to diplomatic meetings, from filing complaints for torture to shows of support, continues to mobilize and raise awareness of the situation in Western Sahara, and of the fate of her husband, in the hope of his release or at least a new and fair trial.

The documentary reflects the voices and photographic looks Saharawi women because they are the protagonists of this project allows us to see between the lines injustices and gaps in a decadent international system and little bit attached to reality, however, they are also women who with their example remind us that even in the injustices, despair and deprivation there is hope and dreams do not end.

This is a powerful and unique movie, which not only preserves the Saharawi people’s personal and cultural history as nomads, but also documents what it means to be a “state-less” person. It is a human rights plea to a world, which has been sadly silent on the long time abuse of the Saharawi people. When the Sun Came for Them documents what it means to be a “state-less” person and how after decades of abuse even pacifist Muslims are turned into fighters committed to war. It is a timely and important film. All was shot by a crew of three recent college graduates on two iPads. It is true backpack journalism.
