The Tulse Luper Suitcases, Part 1: The Moab Story

A comic study of 20th-century history, reconstructing the life of writer, creator and professional prisoner Tulse Luper. Born in 1911 Newport and last heard of in 1989, Luper’s life is pieced together from the evidence found in 92 suitcases scattered across the globe. In the first of three parts, we follow Luper through three distinct episodes: as a child during the First World War; as an explorer in Mormon Utah; and as a writer in Belgium during the rise of fascism.

A ritual of grids, reflections and chasms; a complete state of entropy; a space that devours itself; a vertigo that destroys the gravity of the Earth; a trap that captures us inside the voids of the screen of light: «That blank arena wherein converge at once the hundred spaces» (Hollis Frampton).

Amor

Landscapes revealed themselves through text, paper through movement, while the sun gave them relief. This is a journey across found words, enunciating a discovery, their textures constructing the sea and the waves, in a travelogue from the first exploration, the first step over the sand towards the shore. “Amor” writes this joy to underline it in its time, captured on paper. This film has been composed through a scanner, and it’s the first chapter of the “Reír al Sol” series.

Body and Landscape

Body and Landscape is the exploration of the world of a dancer, who finds in her body the best way to experience the world. Above all, the short film alludes to the cycle of life, where there is a beginning, a middle and an indication of the end. The construction of the film's visual and sound landscape is developed from two narratives, which communicate simultaneously. One that starts with the dancer, who uses dance as the main means of expression and that follows a chronologically organized direction in the narrative and another that starts from visual plans based on nature, without obeying a temporal logic, and that refer to the story by Hans Christian Anderson.

Taxidermia

Set over three generations and beginning with a sexually frustrated orderly during WWII who relieves his tensions in the most outlandish, gross ways. The result of his liaison is a glutton who grows up to be a champion speed eater. He produces a child who becomes obsessed with taxidermy.

Invisible

Shot in black and white, Invisible merges performance art and personal documentary to reflect personal and shared experiences during the military coup. Set in an abandoned building where many young revolutionists sought refuge, the seemingly invisible experiences of displacement, loss, suffering and anger are made visible through words and subtle movements.

Freedom of Clouds

Informed by Taoist notions on the flow of nature, Freedom of Clouds is an experimental audiovisual poem composed of two visual languages which shift in tandem with the sonic landscape. The first involves abstract audio-reactive particles imitating the movement of dust, while the second is composed of Myanmar’s urban scenes which blur and morph as the piece moves away from form and definition.

period@period

Set against an operatic soundscape, period@period is a sensual interplay of sound and image that focuses on the anonymous protagonist’s monthly period and the rituals associated with it.

Stop-motion experimental short where two men communicate with one another, talk on the telephone, smoke cigarettes, and contort themselves. Produced 1987 and released in 1988 on the VHS compilation Fat of the Land, released via Factory Records video imprint IKON. Dance of Darkness

The dark sensibilities and cultural resonances of Butoh, the radical Japanese dance movement, are explored in this multilayered work. Profoundly rooted in both traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, Butoh arose in a spirit of revolt in the early 1960s. Characterized by frank sexuality and bodily distortions, Butoh transforms traditional dance movements into new forms, stripping away the taboos of contemporary Japanese culture to reveal a secret world of darkness and irrationality.

Experiment Three: Broken

Watch drug-addled friends through the eyes of a kaleidoscope. See coloured shapes dance and flail around. Witness people clubbing, getting beaten up, dancing and being used as human guinea pigs – all these in segments held together by two French teenagers finding themselves waiting for Godot. Experiment Three is another trip into the disturbing and bizarre world of public service announcements, contorted into something confronting and colourful.

The Turning Turtle

As we go on to witness the nature of the frame, will the images presented to us be able to convey his intentions, thoughts, and ultimately, his fate?
