Overview

She finds solace in an innocent friendship with Mabel Wright, a 10-year-old florist's daughter who brings her violets daily. A persistent suitor, Alec Lang, urges Violet to leave Jim for him. After Mabel is hit by a car and hospitalized, her father delivers a final bunch of violets and a message to Violet. This act of devotion rekindles Violet's sense of duty and "wifely love," prompting her to reject Alec and commit to remaining true to her daughter's memory while at Mabel's bedside.

Unbeknownst to the grandfather, we learn that there are twin sons and our heroine keeps one baby to raise herself. The narrative jumps ahead to the boy's twenty-first birthday and we see what's become of them. Not surprisingly, the wealthy son has grown up spoiled and greedy while the poor one works hard and loves his mother.

Joe and Bessie meet again by chance and Joe, in helping her to keep her secret, incurs Marion's jealousy. Bessie, extorted by a former acquaintance in desperation, decides to tell everything to her husband. However, to aid Joe she accuses Wallace (Miljan), with whom Marion is preparing to go away. Finally, Joe and Marion are reconciled, but Bessie learns that the world never forgives a woman who sins even when she has reformed.

Curiosity draws her to the Shanghai slums where, unknown to Gail, her driver is participating in a scheme to abduct her. Gail escapes, but in the process is accosted by drunken sailors. Luckily, Rupert O'Dare, a young Englishman, is nearby and rescues Gail. He escorts her back to the hotel where he discloses his identity as a British secret service agent and proceeds to arrest the Griswolds for smuggling opium in antique vases. Gail then reveals herself as a member of the United States Secret Service and the two agents fall in love.

Unfortunately, she arrives at Dick's place on the evening of his bachelor party, but Dick persuades his fiancée, Betsy Caldwell, to put up Mary for the night. Mary soon finds out something about Betsy that Dick does not know.

A gorilla escapes from its master on a ship, breaks into a young woman's home, and kills her. The woman's fiancé, Jim, who had visited earlier, is framed for the murder by the police. The famous detective Sherlock Holmes reads about the case, investigates, and uses his deductive reasoning (playing the violin, finding the gorilla). Holmes exposes the real killer (the gorilla and its master) and frees Jim just before he's convicted, revealing the true sequence of events in court.
