Penthesilea: Queen of the Amazons

Penthesilea, the first of six films made by Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen, traverses thousands of years to look at the image of the Amazonian woman in myth. It asks, among other questions, is the Amazonian woman a rare strong female image or is she a figure derived from male phantasy? The film explores the complexities of such questions, but does not seek any concrete answers.

The Mill at Calder's End

In the remote village of Calder's End stands an old windmill, a repository of dark secrets. Nicholas Grimshaw has returned to this haunted place, his childhood home, intent on breaking a generations old family curse. Grimshaw's journey takes him deep below the decaying mill,into mysterious, forgotten catacombs, where upon he confronts the very source of the evil that has corrupted his family. The Mill at Calder's End is a gothic tale inspired by the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, and M.R. James and is told with the use of 36 inch tall bunraku rod puppets operated by puppeteers dressed in black.

Tracing Roots

A new documentary that follows master Haida weaver Delores Churchill on a journey to replicate a spruce root hat discovered with the Long Ago Person Found. The 300-year-old traveler was discovered in British Columbia and DNA testing discovered living descendants in Canada and Alaska. Her search crosses cultures and borders, and involves artists, scholars and scientists. The project raises questions about understanding and interpreting ownership, knowledge and connection.

The Door

The residents of a building have found novel ways to enter and exit as their front door is broken. However, once the door is repaired they continue to avoid the door.

Dream (1988) is a somnambulist short about dreams taking over reality and rendering protagonists inactive.

Himorogi

This short film by Marina and Alessio Pierro was inspired by the way that Walerian Borowczyk would project photographs and drawings onto a transparent screen, the dust and and smoke-filled light becoming an almost tangible part of the experience. A 'Himorogi' is a sacred space or altar, and this one pays homage to Borowczyk's visionary cinema.

Suzy Snowflake

Based on the hit 1951 jingle, this stop-motion animated short briefly follows the titular Suzy Snowflake as she brings joyful snowfall with her, heralding people to play with her before the chance is gone.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

Gromit’s concern that Wallace is becoming too dependent on his inventions proves justified, when Wallace invents a “smart” gnome that seems to develop a mind of its own. Jan Švankmajer: The Complete Short Films

Featuring all 26 entries in the official filmography, this is the world's first complete DVD edition of the short films by the legendary Czech Surrealist filmmaker-animator Jan Švankmajer. Technically and conceptually astonishing in their own right, these films are also as remarkable for their philosophical consistency as for their frequently mind-boggling imagery. This package also includes a bonus short, Johanes Doktor Faust (1958), the longer cut of 'The Cabinet of Jan Švankmajer' with a new introduction by the Quay Brothers, the documentary Les Chimeres des Švankmajer (2001), interviews with Jan and Eva Švankmajer and examples of their work in other media. The Team Rocket leader, Giovanni, has found Mewtwo in a remote area of the Johto region. The Clone Pokemon are also captured and are then used as bait for Mewtwo. The situation then becomes a battle between the wills of Mewtwo and Giovanni; and Mewtwo also tries to discover if it and the clones have a purpose in life, even though they are products of science.

Harry Potter: A History Of Magic
