Jonas Mekas and Agnes Varda are my mentors, they inspired me to create my own movement, But they are both different to a certain point. And although this small reflection on my mentors is brief, I know that they will continue to inspire future filmmakers. Because something magical that I still see in cinema is that It's not the prizes, nor the money It is the ability that one as a director has to inspire and be inspired by another director. And even though the world is very screwed, there is only one thing left to do: keep filming.

Rise Up: The legacy of Nat Turner

In 1831 African American slave, and preacher, Nat Turner lead a bloody slave revolt in Southampton County, Virginia. It was a fight against the enslavement of African and American people of color who longed for freedom from tyranny. This one-hour doc follows Roger Guenveur Smith as he travels to Southampton County, Virginia to take viewers on a physical journey through the town, fields and farms where Turner lived, fought, and died; along the way meeting with academics, locals, and descendants to peel back the layers of one of the most misunderstood Americans in history. In addition to candid discussions on historical and contemporary racial tensions, Roger asks us to consider why Turner is not lofted up across America as an early black revolutionary figure who helped to shape the nation.

Whore

Putta (Whore) follows the story of three prostitutes living in the town of Foz do Iguaçu, on the triple border between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. The film traverses the complexities of each of the three prostitutes personal lives’–from transexuality to family and motherhood–in the context of the brothels and streets in which they work.

"Tatame" is an effective portrait of the biggest stars of FILL; from their daily routine to the transformations they go through to become the main characters of the show.

Algérie du possible

By meeting his former comrades in combat, the film follows the journey of Yves Mathieu, anti-colonialist in Black Africa then lawyer for the FLN. When Algeria became independent, he drafted the Decrees of March on vacant property and self-management, promulgated in 1963 by Ahmed Ben Bella. Yves Mathieu's life is punctuated by his commitments in an Algeria that was then called "The Lighthouse of the Third World". The director, who is his daughter, returns to the conditions of his death in 1966.

The Betrayed

As Russian tanks advance over the plains of Chechnya, a group of Russian mothers search for the sons, conscripts from the ill-fated 131st Brigade, they believe have been captured by the Chechens. They place their trust in Colonel Kosov, a Russian liaison officer responsible for organising prisoner exchanges across the front line.

Night Will Fall

When Allied forces liberated the Nazi concentration camps in 1944-45, their terrible discoveries were recorded by army and newsreel cameramen, revealing for the first time the full horror of what had happened. Making use of British, Soviet and American footage, the Ministry of Information’s Sidney Bernstein (later founder of Granada Television) aimed to create a documentary that would provide lasting, undeniable evidence of the Nazis’ unspeakable crimes. He commissioned a wealth of British talent, including editor Stewart McAllister, writer and future cabinet minister Richard Crossman – and, as treatment advisor, his friend Alfred Hitchcock. Yet, despite initial support from the British and US Governments, the film was shelved, and only now, 70 years on, has it been restored and completed by Imperial War Museums under its original title "German Concentration Camps Factual Survey".
